- 02/11/09 Congressman Gary Peters today applauded Congressional leadership's decision to act to halt a pay raise for Members of Congress. Rep. Peters publicly called for a congressional pay freeze last month and co-sponsored H.R. 156, the Stop the Congressional Pay Raise Act of 2009, to prevent Members of Congress from receiving a pay increase until at least 2011.
- 02/11/09 Congressman Gary Peters is leading an effort to save funding for the creation of manufacturing jobs in the economic recovery plan moving toward completion in Congress. The House-passed version of H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, included $30 million in additional funding for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, but the funding was eliminated in the package approved by the Senate yesterday.

- 02/06/09 The U.S. Department of Labor reported today that the country lost 598,000 jobs in January, the largest one month drop since 1974. The national unemployment rate jumped to 7.6%. The number of unemployed Americans rose to 11.6 million, the most since December 1982. The U.S. has lost 3.6 million jobs since the current recession began, 1.1 million of these in the manufacturing sector. Nearly 1.8 million jobs have been lost in the last three months alone.
- 02/04/09 The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation today to renew and expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) by a vote of 290-135. President Barack Obama plans to sign the bill later today.
- 01/27/09 Congressman Gary Peters today signed onto legislation to freeze the salaries of Members of Congress. Peters is cosponsoring H.R. 156, the Stop the Congressional Pay Raise Act of 2009, to prevent Members of Congress from receiving a pay raise until 2011. Peters' action comes less than a week after President Obama signed an executive order to freeze the pay of senior White House staff.

- 01/15/09 The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote today on a measure that could bring much needed relief to homeowners facing foreclosure. The bill would require that if Congress releases the remaining $350 billion of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP, also known as the $700 billion Wall St. bailout), the Treasury Department must allocate $40 to $100 billion of those funds to help homeowners stay in their homes.
- 01/09/09 Congressman Gary Peters today delivered his first floor statement as a United States Representative, speaking in support of legislation to promote equal pay for women. H.R. 12, the Paycheck Fairness Act, strengthens the Equal Pay Act President Kennedy signed into law in 1963, closes loopholes allowing employers to avoid anti-discrimination laws and strengthens penalties for discriminatory employers. The Act passed the House today by a vote of 256-163.

More than 11 million Americans are now unemployed, the most in nearly 25 years. In total, the country lost about 2.6 million jobs in 2008, the most since 1945.
