Rep. Peters Statement on Passage of the Farm Bill01/29/14
Washington - Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (D-MI) released the following statement after he supported a comprehensive Farm Bill. The Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013 (H.R. 2642) passed the House by a vote of 251-166.
“Michigan farmers and agricultural producers play a vital role in feeding families in our state and all over the world. They help support a strong middle class and our economy in Michigan.
“Today the House passed a bipartisan Farm Bill that will provide much needed certainty to our agricultural community over the next five years. With our economic recovery still fragile, hunger is one of the tough challenges facing too many of our families. This Farm Bill, while not perfect, represents a compromise to strengthen nutrition programs and support food banks offering critical services. It also helps root out wasteful spending on unnecessary direct payments, saving taxpayers nearly $40 billion while still protecting subsidies for farmers who need them.
“By passing a Farm Bill today, Congress put our farmers, agricultural producers and working families first. I’m encouraged that we can continue to find common ground and offer common sense solutions to strengthen our economy and invest in opportunity for our middle class and those aspiring to get there.”
